Is It Time for Some Musical Spring Sorting?
Do you have a cupboard full of resources? Do you use any of these for your musical activities?
If not, why not have a Spring sort through your cupboard to see if you could use any to make Music Time a little more fun!
You may use props to get the children to think about songs or rhymes, or it may be you encourage the children to interact with the prop in a song, rhyme or listening activity. You can then put the props in your music or performing area so the children can continue to explore a song, rhyme or piece of music. For the larger props or those that may cause injury, if not used under the supervision of an adult (e.g. an umbrella), print pictures to put in the music area.
Here is a list of some props with a few ideas.
Scarves
Creating dances and movement activities to do with the weather: Rain, Snow, Rainbows
Umbrellas:
The song Please open your umbrellas is great for getting to children to listen to the rain sounds.
Soft toys:
Interacting with a soft toy to make it make a sound e.g. Under teddy's jumper
Dance and movement activities interacting with a soft toy. e.g. Round and round the garden
Song mitt puppets
These are great for counting down songs: e.g.
- 5 little ducks
- 5 little men in a flying saucer
- 5 little froggies
Small World Vehicles.
These might be used as a stimulus to initiate a song: e.g.
- The wheels on the bus
- I’m a little tractor
Fabrics and Blankets
Great for creating a dark space whilst listening to music: In the Hall of the Mountain King.
Printed fabrics for singing songs: I can sing a rainbow
So go hunting and see what you could use in your cupboard!
Most of the activities mentioned above can be found on my Early Years Music Ideas site. Click here to read more about it: https://www.musicintheearlyyears.com/early-years-music-ideas-2-to-5
